One night, around midnight, there was a knock on my door. I wondered who could it be at this late hour. When I opened the door, a good friend that I had known for many years stood there. Next to him was another man. My friend said to me, “This brother does Hijama. Let him do for you.”
I was puzzled and confused, didn’t even know what my friend was talking about. I asked him, “What is that? He said, “Its very good for health, and It’s a sunnah,. Let him do it for you.” I said okay, and let both of them into my apartment.
The man was a Hijama specialist from Yemen who was now residing in Buffalo, NY and was visiting Boston for a few days.. He had learned to do Hijama from his father, who learned it from his father. It was a skill passed down for generations. But at that time, I had no clue about it. However, I trusted my friend so I let the man perform Hijama on me. He placed some cups on my back and proceeded to make small cuts and let the dirty blood flow into the cups. When he was done, I felt amazing. I felt like the burdens of the world had been lifted off my shoulders. And I slept like a baby that night. About 6 months later, I felt uptight and stressed out again. My mind immediately turned towards that man from Yemen. I told myself, “Looks like its time to do Hijama again.” So, I called the man on the phone, only to get the sounds “Beep Bop Beep, this number has been disconnected is no longer in service.” I said to myself, “Oh bummer, now what do I do?” I called my friends to see if they know anyone who does Hijama. Most of them were in the same boat I was in, asking me, “what is that?” They too didn’t know about it, let alone know anyone who does it. I looked up on the Internet, but there was nothing much on Hijama at that time. Mind you, this was 17 years ago. Fortunately, at that time I accidently ran into the man in Boston. I said to him, “Oh, aren’t you the man who did Hijama on me some months back?” He said, “Yes.” I quickly invited me to my place to do Hijama on me again. After he was done, I felt amazing, felt like the burdens of the world had been lifted off my shoulders. Feeling relaxed and comfortable. The man told me he had moved to another state and gave me his new phone number. About six months later, again I felt uptight and stressed out again. So I told myself, “Time to do Hijama again.” And I called the Yemeni man again, only to hear, “Beep Bop Beep, this number has been disconnected is no longer in service.” I was shocked. I told myself, “What, not again.” At that time, I made a decision, “Hijama is a great natural healing and it’s a sunnah too. If no one is providing this service here, then I must learn it and provide it to the community here in Boston”. At that time, no one was teaching on how to do Hijama. But in Malaysia, the country I come from, Hijama is a popular natural healing modality and its also taught by many centers. So I went back to Malaysia to learn it from an experienced Hijama practitioner, and came back to Boston and offered it as a service. The important distinguishing factor I wanted to do was to offer Hijama as a reliable service, where people can call to ask questions or to set up an appointment. It would not be a service where its here today gone tomorrow, like the Hijama specialist I was involved with earlier.
