Hany Al-Khedr, MD, UC Health gastroenterologist and assistant professor of internal medicine for the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, says that more people are experiencing gastrointestinal problems these days. The effects of gastrointestinal problems have far reaching consequences on other parts of the body.
One of his patients, Khalid Badawi, 33 yrs old, developed aches in his joints a few years ago, He had inflamed knees and ankles, and experienced constant back pain. He saw an orthopedic doctor to see if he was suffering from arthritis, as he has a family history of the condition. He was surprised when the orthopedic doctor told him his joint swelling and pain was coming from gastrointestinal problems.

Gastrointestinal problems such as heartburn, gastritis, bloating, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, and fatigue can disrupt daily life, causing discomfort and impacting overall well-being. Digestion begins in your mouth, where saliva starts to break down food when you chew. When you swallow, your chewed food moves to your esophagus, a tube that connects your throat to your stomach. Muscles in the esophagus push the food down to a valve at the bottom of your esophagus, which opens to let food into the stomach. Your stomach breaks food down using stomach acids. The stomach is like a cooking pot. When food reaches the pot, it is broken down by the “cooking” process, whereby stomach acids act on the food. Since a pot requires fire or heat to cook food, it is recommended to avoid excess cold and raw foods such as ice-cold drinks and ice cream. If you do not have enough digestive fire, your metabolism may be too slow and symptoms may include bloating and undigested food in the stools.. If you have too much digestive fire, you may suffer from heartburn, an insatiable appetite, or constipation. Then the food moves into the small intestine. There, digestive juices from several organs, like your pancreas and gallbladder, break down the food more, and nutrients are absorbed. What’s left goes through your large intestine. The large intestine absorbs water. The waste then moves out of your body through the rectum and anus. The spleen and pancreas also play an important role in digestion. The spleen transforms food and fluid into useful nutrients and to transport those nutrients to where they are needed in the body. The liver is involved in helping to cleanse the blood and detoxify the body. It also secretes bile which is stored in the gallbladder. Bile is required for the proper digestion of fats. Liver soothes and smoothes the functions of the whole body, including the emotions. A person whose liver system is not functioning properly will likely have emotional struggles such as irritability, frustration, aggression, impatience, stubbornness, and anger. Emotional healing is important to heal gastrointestinal issues as stomach is the seat of emotions. If you are suffering from gastrointestinal problems, HijamaEnergetics can help.
