Have you had the experience of going through a shocking experience in the past, which you still continue to feel its effects in the present? This can be an experience like driving and crashing into another car. And then, feeling scared to drive any car anymore. Or hearing about a plane crash that a close friend or family member was in, and now you’re feeling tense and worried whenever you have to fly a plane.
It is normal to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation. But if you’re continuing to experience the fear long after the original trauma had passed, then you may be suffering from a mental ailment called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. It is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event in which you experienced physical harm that occurred.
Because you may have had a bad marriage in the past, you keep replaying bad memories of the past relationship in your mind. When any new man shows interest, you immediately feel scared and stressed even though the new man is genuinely nice and caring to you. And you quickly say no to the new marriage proposal. With this condition of emotional distress, you may have intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to your past experience that last long after the traumatic event has ended. You may relive the events through flashbacks or nightmares. You may feel sadness, fear or anger; and you may feel detached or estranged from similar people. You may avoid situations or people that remind you of the previous traumatic events, and you may have strong negative reactions to something as ordinary as meeting a person from the same country or the new man speaking with a similar accent as the man in your previous marriage. Symptoms of PSTD may include Intrusive thoughts such as repeated, involuntary memories; distressing dreams; or flashbacks of the traumatic event. Flashbacks may be so vivid that you may feel you are reliving the traumatic experience or seeing it before your eyes. You may also avoid reminders of the trauma that may include avoiding people, places, activities, objects and situations that may trigger distressing memories. You may try to avoid remembering or thinking about the previous traumatic events. You may resist talking about what happened or how you feel about it. Also, you may wrongly blame yourself by thinking “I’m not loveable” or “There is something wrong with me.” You may have ongoing fear, horror, anger, guilt or shame. You may lose interest in activities you previously enjoyed; feeling detached or estranged from others; or being unable to experience positive emotions (a void of happiness or satisfaction). You may become irritable and have angry outbursts; behaving recklessly or in a self-destructive way;, being overly watchful of one’s surroundings in a suspecting way; being easily startled; or having problems concentrating or sleeping. PTSD often occurs with other related conditions, such as depression, substance use, memory problems and other physical and mental health problems.
